Subaru Retrofitting

Upgrading Subarus using parts from another type of Subaru.

  1. Started by suberdave,

After having a 6Speed in my car for over a year, and the matching R180 sitting on the shelf in my grage, i finaly got the parts i needed to Hybrid my axles to install it in my car... The same parts that i had made will work to mate WRX shafts to 05+ STi inner joints so you can install a R180 diff and keep your R160 hubs. PM me in interested in more information.

  2. I thought I'd start a new thread for my engine swap to post progress in as well as ask questions. I picked up a 1999 Impreza Sport, manual transmission, and have pulled the engine out along with the entire bulkhead wiring harness, computer and exhaust. I chose the 1999 EJ22 for it's slight power increase over previous year, OBDII and overall reliability. Before I start stripping the harness down to the essentials I need for the merger, I would like to address a few things. My main concerns are as follows. The 1999 system has a fuel temperature sensor in the tank. Do I need this for the engine to run properly or can this pin on the ECM be left floating or tricked …

  3. Id like to know what rear suspension would be the best to swap into my first gen. 1981 Brat. The fist gens aren't that great for adding lifts or even finding parts for. I know the later models are a little wider, but i have plenty of fabrication experience. I plan on swapping in a ej22 later. A better question would be, what donor car should I be looking for. Years and models please. Im new to subarus. Id also like to keep the D/R 4spd. Unless i can find a better dual range option.

So I jumped in and began the ej22 swap into my GL wagon but wondering if I already goofed. The donor car that I got was an 90 Legacy 2wd automatic, and I'm putting into my MT 4wd. I've got everything pulled, about to start going through the wiring harness and all of a sudden I'm questioning myself. Is the ECU from the Legacy going to work seeing as I'm putting it up to a MT instead of an AT? Thanks for taking the time to read this silly question and thanks in advance for any advice!

Hey all. I'm looking into all the different possibilities for engine swaps into my 86 BRAT and 87 XT. I'd really like to put EE20 boxer turbo diesels into them, but can't find physical dimensions for these engines anywhere. People drop the EJ18 and EJ20s into these cars. I did find out that the EE20 is shorter front to back than the EJ20. I'm more worried about width. Can anyone get me the full physical dimensions on the EJ18, EJ20 and most importantly the EE20 diesel? Thanks in advance.

We have a 2013 outback VIN 4S4BRBCC2D3302549 Can we swap in a type B radio, 86201AJ66A to replace the existing radio which is a type A we believe, 86201AJ61A Better yet, could we swap in a navigation radio?

  8. Hey All, Title kind of says it all. I have a 99 Forester with the SOHC 2.5 (with *another* popped HG).... I "happen" to have a 90,000 mile 1990 EJ22 sitting in my garage. I've done a bit of searching and I've seen mention that it's do-able...but yeah - I'd like to maybe drop the EJ22 into the 99 and make it run again. What all is involved ? Anyone have a quick and dirty run-through ? Thanks, Dan

I am planing on lifting my outback 2" and have a blown rear strut. 120K on them, going to replace all 4. I have been looking at 2" tower mount spacers. Was wondering if I could just buy longer pre loaded struts instead of adding spacers?

So, I'm almost done with the wiring harness thin-out and have an issue that I'm not sure how to solve and just want to get a bit of insight. I didn't manage to get pictures, but can grab some later if my explanation doesn't make any sense, so stick with me. There's is a Red-Green wire from one of the ECU plugs that goes to the coolant temp sensor that is the main wire in question. Before it goes far from the ECU, it splits and two of them become shields for other sets of wires. One of those shields is for the throttle sensor wires, and this shield is where it gets weird. Those throttle sensor wires go through the SMJ, right next to throttle sensor wires that go to th…

Hi guys. I've been gathering parts for a dual exhaust port EJ22 im trying to re seal and put into my EA82 car. I took the flex plate off the other day and it is cracked all the way around the bolts. Its a wonder it still was in 1 piece. The flex plate was pushed towards the engine, and it was rubbing on what I understand is the oil separator plate (left side big one), and the small 2 bolt plate (right side). Should I worry about these parts and replace them or are they ok to re use? Stupid question I know. They don't leak though. If I can figure out how I'll post a pic.

Did a search and it looks like no one has done it yet. Saw a nice set at the PAP today and I think I'm going to go for it. I've done a XT seat swap into a EA81 before and it wasnt that bad. Any thoughts?

  14. I went the route of having the EJ sized necks brazed onto my stock EA81 radiator for my Brat conversion. The donor motor is from a 95 Legacy, and the stock legacy hoses fit perfect with just a little trimming from either end to compensate for the radiator being closer and not as wide as what they were designed for. I was very worried about this step, but I'm pretty pumped, it looks like it has really come together. My fan shroud and electric fans seems to fit the space nicely and I hope it will keep everything cool, I would like to come back around and install the AC, but I'll just get it running first. Hopefully someone can help me out with this question. The …

Hello there I know there's a bunch of clutch related posts but I feel mine is different. Okay my car is early 95 WRX ej20 with TD05H Pretty sure the gearbox and clutch is factory. Car was driving fine and everything but then I had to put the car into storage and was not driven for like 6 months. After 6 months I needed to move the car and noticed some issues with the clutch. It would stick to the floor and would come up if I pressed it a few times. It would be intermittent issue not every time but lots Clutch would press in and stay there but it would come up if I pushed on it a few times. I thought it would be the clutch but now I'm reading it cou…

  16. Hey all. Got a question for the advanced swappers out there (numchux, I'm lookin at you) I want to go 5 lug on the front of my EA81 wheeler. It's already using EA82 front suspension/crossmember. My options are 1) Imp/Leg knuckles and brakes and Imp axles. This would work, but would leave me with rear e-brake as my only option. Which is fine, I'm running 01 outback suspension back there, so I COULD hook them up. But I've got Dual ebrake handles and cables already setup for Front ebrake. I run welded diff in rear, and use the front dual ebrake for "traction control" on the front in tippy situations. I'd like to not lose that. 2) XT6 knuckle a…

  17. I have a very low mileage SVX 3.3 engine. Sub 10k miles. I would like to put it in a Subaru. Another SVX would work but the pickings are slim and the cars are 25ish years old. Will it bolt into a Legacy with the 3.0? Even cooler, how difficult would it be to put it into a Brat? That's a much more complicated resto. But would it require swapping tranny too, and if so, which one(s) will mate up with the 3.3? Or could I just rebuild the existing Brat trans? So many questions... In short, I am looking to find true Subaru Gear Heads. My calls/emails to dealerships and specialty shops near Baltimore have been fruitless so far. Another question is: Is there a…

  18. Hello All, I've recently completed an EJ20t conversion on my gen 2 Brat. I installed the Impreza WRX rear diff to go with the gearbox and used the Brat axles with the WRX diff inner cups (male spline). Everything went together well with no issues and it was driving great bit not for long. I pulled left out of a T junction and floored it and the left shaft popped out of the outer CV. I pulled the boot off, re-installed the clip but it did it again. I know that lots of people have done what I did with the axles on a EJ conversion, but nobody seemed to have this issue. I realise that the joint could've been worn previously but I don't think…

I have searched and found one post on this, which the question was never answered. I have the same problem evtte had. The rancho shocks are to soft. Now before I get the "put the air shocks on" story. I have a 4 inch lift on my brat, I also have a canopy with a roof basket and full size spare. So I already have alot of weigh in the rear. When I take off from a stoplight, in the mirrors all I see is pavement. I seen the GD has put the EA82 rear coils on his EA81, I would like to know if there is an easy way this could be done. zzz

It makes more sense for this to be in retrofitting since more people go here for swap help. Again all credit for these diagrams go to scooner Hi everyone, I am just about to finish my swap thanks to Scooner, who sent me some amazing wiring diagrams that I thought I should share with everyone else( don't worry I asked him before I posted this) I studied these along side the numbchux write up, which is an amazing write up, but is just missing a couple vital peices of information which I beleive these address anyway without further adue

  21. Hey guys! In the beginning stages of building my 86 Xt turbo, sadly like most 4wd Xt’s on this planet the air suspension is completely destroyed... my goal is to drop the car as low as I possibly can on coilovers, swap to 5 lug (or get adapters), and eventually engine swap it. I have read a few threads about swapping the air bags for modern struts but i would like a little more detail on what parts I will need to do it with coilovers. The info I have so far is I can use Miata coils for the rear but I’m not sure what to do about the front given that I have 4 lug, I am completely open to swapping to 5 lug if needed for the front but what will I need?

  22. Hi everyone Relatively new here, but I've been studying the forum for a few weeks now (still a noob, but I really try to use the search button and read up before I ask stupid questions... try being the key word Haha) Picked up an 87 XT turbo with the 5mt and fulltime AWD for free from a buddy of mine last week. Air suspension is shot, hasn't run in a few years due to a fuel pump, needs new tires and fresh fluids, but overall clean and complete. Rockers are mostly toast, but other than that rust is pretty minimal. This week I had the luck of finding a 2000 RS for free, no engine or tranny, and interior is shot, but all axles shafts, rear end, drive shaft, …

Dear all, I want to install a dashboard with rpm cluster. I received a very good dash from Mike Russo... I thank Mike very much fro his nice help! I received a RHD cluster form Australia, ordered because it is in Kilometer. I openned the LHD (received from Mike) to put the gauges from the RHD one, you can see the result on the picture. On the speedometer, there is a small black part with 2 wires fitted on it..... What is it ? (sorry no picture for that). Is it a contact to detect if the car is moving? For the seat belts ? The LHD cluster glass is damaged, do you know who can send me a good one ? Have a nice day regards from L…
