  1. My son and I got the tires and wheels on Smokey the Subaru. We bought a set of Toyota 15" steelies and re-drilled the rims. Re-drilling was made easier by using an old hub I had from replacing the front hubs last summer. I also created a template in Adobe Illustrator that I set up on the 4x140mm. I've attached it here for anyone else who wants to use it. subaru_lug_template.pdf Re-driling went pretty well. It was smarter to use about 5 different sizes before ending on the big 1/2" bit at the end of it all. RapidTap makes it a lot easier to get the job done! We got about a 2.5"-3" lift just from adding the wheels and tires. They're 235/60/15 snow tires we bought from a used tire place in Salem, Oregon. I had some tires to trade in from another rig and was able to get all 4 tires plus mounting and balancing for about $100 out of pocket. We went with snow tires because it's almost snowboard season around these parts and I'd rather have the studded snow tires on for his safety over mud traction right now. They certainly clog up with mud quickly but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. The front tire rubs on the front side of the fender ever-so-slightly when you turn the wheel about 20%. Beyond that though we haven't noticed any real issues. We'll likely trim the fender a bit but I'm not convinced I want to spend the money on a 2" lift right now. We'll see... Happy young man...
  2. so i have an 86 ea82 gl wagon that i want to lift about 2 or 3 inches (for now) because my buddy just gave me his old toyo alloy wheels and tires and i want to cram them under my 4x4. ANYWAY, how bad for my car is a hockey puck lift, i've heard that they fail if you don't do it carefully but i feel like that is the case with any lift. thanks for your time.
  3. Bought this Brat on Sunday in Worland, Wyoming. 4/5 lift, 15 inch pugs, jump seats have been added. A little hail damage, and a bit of surface rust. My plan: Ej Frankenmotor swap 5 speed d/r rear disks possibly add power steering Fix surface rust paint white with black bottom White one currently has the frankenmotor and tranny but is extremely rusty
  4. Hey Everyone. I have a '95 Legacy LS. I'm pretty sure it's about time to change the struts. I believe they are original parts on a legacy with 350k on it. I was thinking about putting some outback struts on it, hopefully giving it 1 to 1-1/2 inch lift. Just enough room for a slightly more aggressive tire. I'm not sure if I can just swap the struts out or do I need to swap other parts out in addition to make it all compatible. Thanks for any input you have Travis.

Inhreited the Brat from my step-dad who bought it about 10 years ago. getting ready to turn it into a little rally beast. plenty of rust in all the common brat rust spots (plus a rather odd one on the underside of the hood), but shouldnt be too hard to fix. hard part is gonna be the drive system swap
  7. I recently was given a 78 Subaru Brat, which i am already in love with. I have a few plans for this thing needless to say. My first and foremost project is to build the lift kit for it. Now i have read every single thread there is on lifting a gen 1 brat, trust me, but i still need help. i have all the materials i need for a 5 inch drop lift and 6 inch strut spacers, but i am just wondering if anybody has block specs or maybe just some last minute advice? This thing is never going to be my daily driver, i have a full size Chevy for that so it doesn't need to be comfortable on the highway just somewhat safe. My brat sat in about 9 inches of mud on the side of a road for just about 20 years before i got it, and before that it was not treated well, so its really rough. But it will be perfect for an off-road toy! all i did was drain the fluids out of this thing, put new fluids in, clean spark plugs, put a new fuel pump, coil, and air filter on it and it started up perfectly and runs like new surprisingly! The transmission is pretty noisy, but it's getting quieter the more i drive it. The previous owner decided to spray red primer right over the old paint 20 years ago, and that's why it looks as bad as it does, its not rust. I will keep you guys updated with any new progress! Mine is the red/blue one in the pictures needless to say.
  8. Well I finally manned up and got my impreza lifted! I've got a set of MEATY 215/70/15 snow tires on it now. I have enough clearance around the rear to not need the outback link brackets so I'm going to save those for a car that might pass another inspection instead of this poor thing. I also think I'll run it without the rear swaybar because my family completely dominates my time and it was almost all I could do to get just the struts swapped. I painted the car with an HVLP gun and some slightly thinned hardware store rust paint. The colour didn't turn out quite as OD as it was supposed to but again I don't have time to re-do it all again so it's close enough.   9. Hello everyone, it's been a long time. I had a great time at WCSS 15, and it was a great motivator for me to get back to work on my Brat. Here is a little history for everyone that may be new: I picked up the Brat in 98 after I got back from basic training. I started playing around with fixing it up, and then modding it a little here and there. In 2000 after I got home from a deployment to Saudi Arabia the real modding started when I picked up an imported Ozified 4" lift and put some "bigger" tires on. Around '02ish the USMB saw a great influx in the wheeling scene, we saw a lot of lift, tire mods, engine mods. I took a lot the ideas and started assembling them together, and after getting home from Egypt in '03 I tore the brat down to just the body. I built a 6" "framed" lift, to that I added a Nissan 720 pickup divorce t-case, a 5spd dual range trans fitted behind an ER27. The bed was bobbed a little over a foot and I built whole custom "slide off" front end. A year of tweaking and a couple coats of "Midnight Metallic Blue" paint and she made her way to her first WCSS (and my second), #6 in Hood River. She remained virtually untouched (no more modding) for over 6 years, with the only work being done was fixing what broke, which was of course every time I took it out I broke something. So in 2009 while I was in Iraq I decided that I wanted to make it more reliable, and able to handle more power, so I had my wife start looking for an early 80's Nissan 4wd pickup. When I got home in 2010 I had an 84 Nissan sitting in the driveway right behind the Brat. I started stripping apart the Nissan and then stripping apart the Brat. I had the cut the frame of the Nissan to put the rear tires under the wheel well Then came fitting the engine and trans, that was a bit of a challenge as the frame was designed for a straight 4 And that was where it sat for over a year. I got caught up with work, and other "hobbies" and doing a lot more "family stuff". So the Brat just sat in the driveway, half assembled, waiting. Then the show came a long, and seeing all the other Roo's playing in the mud got something coursing through my veins that had been missing for a while. I came home on Sunday, and that night I started working. Got the newly formed oil pan bolted in, then started working on the exhaust.it is a bit tight moving around in there, so had to get creative with the plumbing there, finished off the header pipe this last weekend. Once the rain lets up I'll get back to it, I hope to fire the engine again before the end of the month, then only a couple page list of things left to do.
  10. So recently I replaced the factory adjustables on my 86 EA82 wagon. I had the old adjustables cranked to the high setting to help clear my 215/70/15 tires. The new shocks had a spring perch that sat a bit lower, (3/4 in.) on the shock than were it was in the high position with the adjustables. So hears what I did to mimic the extra preload/height of the old ones using the new shocks. I did need a pair of old spring perches from another non-adustable EA82 shock set. lucky for me I've got tons of suba-spoob everywhere. here's the pics, pretty self explainitory New perch knocked off the new strut. Flipped over and slid back on Old set of perches slid on "correct" way to make lip to hold the spring Finished, spring perch raised about 3/4 inch from factory setting. Note this mod takes away a tiny bit of the "uptravel" of the shock. About 1/2 inch. Which for me is fine since I don't want the tire to be able to "stuff" too far into the wheel well and rub.
  11. ​Recently I acquired a 2001 lego sedan for $300 and it runs, drives, has a clear title, the only problem with it is the drivers side is bagged up a bit...any who I want to make it into an off road rig. But I'm trying to find a cheap way to lift it, I have a couple of ideas but always looking for suggestions!
  12. Howdy folks. Here's my recently acquired GL. The peeps who had it before me did a little work. This GL makes my fourth Subaru. This is the first one to be lifted, as opposed to the obvious alternative - lowered. So, it's new. To me. '87 GL frame and body. '95 Impreza 2.2. '91 Legacy tranny. 4" SJR lift. Raked. The underbody LED kit was included in purchase. The Weapon-R intake I've had for a number of years. I originally purchased it for a Legacy.... That Legacy was totaled. Held onto it for three years, put it right back where it belongs. An EJ22. I've a number of things to do to this GL. The list is adding up. The most crucial being the front rotors/pads. Upon trying to switch out pads, I discovered the rotors were so far worn, that the created outer lip is preventing the caliper from being removed. I'll figure out what to do there. Also, the bumper. Does anyone have any info on it? I've seen three Subies so far here on USMB with the same bumper. Where'd it come from? Company? Individual? Anwho, if I have any questions... I know who to ask.   13. Ok all i seem to see is pictures of lift with what they have on. What I'm looking for is something that looks more aggressive and has better trail capability than stock, without sacrificing handling or MPG too much. And no tire rubbing! This is still going to be a 90% road car. I'm looking at a 2-4 inch lift. what size tires can I run with each without rubbing? a little at full lock on a slant is one thing but otherwise no rub.
  14. so I have an 86 gl with 2" lift and the front inner boots keep splitting. I've replaced both axles around a month ago and they're both already split. Is there something I can do to stop this or am I just going to have to get really good at swapping them. I know the axles I got were not the best but I would think the boots would last a little longer than that. this car also has the adjustable struts, and they are in the lowest setting. I've put 2 sets of front axles in, in less than 1k miles.
  15. So I wanna lift my legacy, but as a high school student in search of a job, I want to get OK gas mileage. I was thinking a 4in lift would be best, perhaps a 6. With a 4in lift, what kind I mpg am I looking at, same with a 6? My definition of OK is greater than 15mpg. I'm assuming tires play a big role in it as well. I was thinking some 28's...
  16. So, I've been working on my suspension alot latetly. Got the rear super dialed in. 11 inches of travel!!! WOOT WOOT!! But now I need to work on the front. First try: This worked well for the upper shock mount, and the general location. Also, it was super easy to do by hammering a bolt between the channel that made the sway bar mount. Problem is, the bolts stick down low adn got hung up, also, I felt like my down travel was limited. So on to design # 2: I like this setup alot better. While doing this mod I also added 2" to the lift blocks on top of the struts. Also used some aftermarket springs that were on the a De-air suspesnsioned 92 Legacy. This combo is Muuy Bueno!!! 13 inches clearance at the Front Diff!! 4inches of travel Wish that was better, but I can certainly live with it. Questions? Comments? Pics of your mods? Discuss
  17. hello USMB I am mapping out the lift kit that came with my 86 brat, and its not as easy as it looked originally. However i am not deterred! the kit came with 14, 2 inch wide by 4 inch tall blocks, and 2 4 inch tall plates for the rear shocks and one 4x4 plate that i have no clue as to why its there yet. i have to replace my shocks and struts as they are almost dead, so what would you guys suggest me installing in that area. my biggest consern is what do i use the blocks on? and where do they go and am i missing anything that i would need to complete the lift? anything helps
  18. Hello to all, I have a 2003 Baja and would like to give it a slight no too stressful lift. Has anyone here used struts and springs from a later year or from a outback or impreza to lift their vehicle? If so, do I need to replace driveshafts too? Arms? Any help and guidance would be really appreciated. Please no flaming.....
  19. Hello to all, Guess I am supposed to say a little about me here.... Well, happily married father of two, former Army, from Maine originally and came back here because its in my blood. I am a Maine Guide and love to hunt, fish, camp, hike, boat, and all the rounds. I pretty easily put 20,000 miles a year on my daily driver and sometimes more. Have wanted a Baja for quite some time, just managed to find one for cheap in rust free condition. I mean rust free! Going to be asking some questions about lifting slightly with struts. I am new to this forum and to subarus but not to forums in general. I am not an auto mechanic but I am a trained and practicing gun smith and am mechanically inclined. I look forward to reading and interacting here.
  20. So I have decided rather than putting strut lift blocks on my 1990 legacy to get a cheap 2in lift, I would rather switch out struts from an outback or Forrester. How much lift am I looking for each? What about camber issues?
  21. i have a 95 legacy wagon and i can drive it anywhere , im always folling my friends in their lifted pickups etc. only thing is i would like more clearance, especially with the tow kit on the back that hangs down a bit lower. i believe my friend put outback suspension on his but was wondering what the tallest or best suspension to buy would be? im looking for something that i can just get from a "pull n save" for fairly cheap and would be fairly easy to find. any ideas??

The only sad thing is...its an automatic My goals for this project are as follows: Custom Bumper Custom Roof Rack 2in Strut Lift Bigger Tires (if anyone could help with sizes that would be awesome!) Make it last till I'm 18 And last but not least. Get it as muddy as possible

I have a 2000 Outback with just about every option available at the time that is without an engine that is strictly a parts vehicle that I picked up for cheap, and I have a 2001 Legacy L sedan as a daily driver. What I was wondering is that could I take everything off the Outback and put it on my Legacy sedan? Now I know Subaru's are good with running all the wiring and provisions for the options even though they did not come with the car so that all you need is the component, the switch and the fuse or relay. But I would just like to confirm this with some things such as the rear view mirror with the built in compass the heated side view mirrors the AM/FM/tape/6 CD changer/and weather band radio the left and right upper door tweeter speakers Another question is that I would also like to lift my legacy with the outback struts. What all would I need to swap to do this? obviously the struts, but also I heard of swapping the rear control arms off the Outback on to whatever you are putting the on for camber and after that I really don't know. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks, Luke
  25. Now available again, my BOSS 3" EA81 lift kits are only $300 plus $30 shipping. These are made with the same high quality as any of my other lifts, and include all the necessary hardware for installation. Steering link not included, and you will have to provide new rear shocks, the same Rancho part number that many use for the 4" lifts also works on the 3" lifts.
